BPMN for Business Analysts
The BPMN for BAs training course introduces Business Process Model and Notation diagramming techniques applicable to those working as business analysts and is available as a 1, 2 or 3-day course depending on the level of understanding required.
Course summary
BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation) is intended to provide a common standard to enable Business Analysts to document business processes.
BPMN attempts to bridge the gap between business processes that can be read and understood by business analysts, business stakeholders and technical teams.
One of the challenges of using BPMN is that as a technique it often allows different styles to document the same thing. This is discussed during the optional 2nd day of the course.
Another challenge facing groups of process modellers is achieving a common look and feel, and consistent level of detail on their diagrams. This is covered during the optional third day of BPMN training which is run as a ‘workshop’ style session where delegates are encouraged to convert some of their ‘existing’ process models to BPMN format.
Delivery Method:
Classroom and virtual (although classroom is recommended wherever feasible).
This course is not available in our public schedule but is available for on-site delivery.
If you are looking for a public training course, our BCS Modelling Business Processes course may be suitable as it also covers the basics of BPMN.
Our virtual BPMN training courses are delivered via Zoom.
Course Tutors
Our BPMN training course tutors are practising business change professionals who have been using and teaching BPMN for over 10 years.
Suitable for
Business Analysts and anyone working in business change or IT projects and wanting to understand, model and improve business processes using the BPMN standard.
The content of the course may be modified to reflect the level of experience of the delegates, from those with no experience of process modelling to very experienced modellers.
This course content may be split into up to three separate sessions and clients may select to choose to run 1, 2 or 3-day versions of the course as follows:
Day 1 – Introduction to basic BPMN, common faults/mistakes
Day 2 – Use of more complex BPMN techniques and consideration of BPMN diagramming standards
Day 3 – Workshop day to focus on diagram levelling and standardisation with the objective to ensure that different diagram modellers produce diagrams with roughly the same look and feel.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course the delegate will be able to:
- Understand how and when Business Analysts should use BPMN
- Understand the techniques used within BPMN
- Draw BPMN diagrams with a common look and feel, and to a consistent level of detail
There is no examination for this course, so the focus is entirely on practical use of BPMN in the workplace.
Course structure
We find that individual clients have quite different needs in terms of BPMN training. The following course structure represents one possible approach. Please let us know if you would like to change this structure. One of our experienced process modelling experts will be happy to discuss with you.

Day 2 (Optional)

Individual and team-based exercises are performed throughout the course to encourage learning. This course does not make use of any electronic diagramming or CASE tools as the focus is on learning BPMN diagramming techniques only.
